This settling in period is to ensure your child is fully relaxed and happy in their new environment, and happy and relaxed with their new key person and other practitioners. Whilst we operate a settling in week its important to recognise children are different, and some may need longer to settle in than others. Your child’s Key Person will work with you to ensure that your little one is happy and settled into the nursery. When you come to settle your child in please remember to bring in your child’s red medical book for filling in the relevant section on their forms and a list of important contact numbers.
The Key Person Approach
Winterton House Nursery are highly committed to identifying and meeting the individual needs of each child attending and we want children to feel safe and happy in the setting. For this reason, we operate a Key Person approach whereby every member of staff is responsible for a group of children, liaising with their families and maintaining records of development and learning. Each child attending Winterton House Nursery will be assigned a Key Person and they will spend time with the child’s parents/carers gathering information about the child and family, when settling the child into the nursery. The Key Person is the child’s family’s initial, but not exclusive, point of contact in the nursery and children will be looked after by other staff too as all staff work and engage with all children in the room.
Key persons develop positive relationships with children and their families and be fostered and that a Key Person will form strong attachments with their key children and will know them well. All staff assigned key children are responsible for observing and recording assessments on all children, generally taking brief notes of individual children’s achievements and progress. The Key Person is also responsible for updating their children’s records
We want children to feel safe, stimulated and happy in the setting and to feel secure and comfortable with staff. We also want parents to have confidence in both their children's well-being and their role as active partners with our setting. We aim to make our setting a welcoming place where children settle quickly and easily because consideration has been given to the individual needs and circumstances of children and their families.
